Three shells sit beside beach grass, with the sea behind them. Their colors range from warm orange to pale cream and dark gray. In this photograph from ShellHaul’s Etsy shop, you can see those differences before looking closely at the surfaces.

The details that make you look again

Look at the ridges running toward each narrow tip. On the orange shell, pale lines follow the length of the surface. The cream-colored shell has softer bands of color, while light streaks stand out against the dark gray shell. Side by side, the three give you more to look at than a single outline.

The way you position a shell can change what you notice about it. Turn it a little to compare the opening, the outside and the curve of its shape. You may prefer one view from across the room and another when you sit beside it.

A place for it at home

A shelf or a table gives you somewhere to enjoy a shell up close. You can give it a place beside things you already enjoy, without planning a whole coastal room around it. Leave enough room to see the shape and the surface that caught your attention.
