Check the fit

Before choosing a decorative shell, measure the place where you plan to display it. Record the usable width and depth. If a shelf sits above it, measure the height you have available too. Include the stand in your plan if you intend to use one.

Now compare those measurements with the exact item's stated dimensions. A close-up photograph can help you inspect appearance, but you still need a scale reference and measurements to assess fit. Ask which dimension the seller means by length and how the shell sits in the pictured orientation.

Try a simple paper footprint on the shelf. Use the listed width and depth to mark out the space, then look at it from the angle where you will see the display. This is a planning aid, not a guarantee: a curved or irregular object may need a different position or support.

Inspect the exact piece

Inspect condition before deciding. Ask for views of the opening, edges and underside, along with close-ups of any disclosed chips or repairs. Decide which imperfections you would accept and which would change your purchase. Avoid assuming that a photo of a group shows the exact item you will receive.

Keep identification and history separate from appearance. If species, origin or sourcing matters to your decision, ask what evidence supports the seller's description. Do not infer those facts from color or shape alone. Leave an unsupported detail unresolved rather than adding it to the object's story.

Review the terms

Before ordering, review the complete price and the seller's shipping and return terms for that item. Confirm the exact piece, its measurements and any display support included. If the dimensions leave too little room for the arrangement you want, choose another position or keep looking.

You can admire an object and still decide it does not suit the shelf you have. Make that decision while you can compare the measurements, photos and terms in front of you.
